WellSteps: New Study Shows Impact of Employee Wellness Efforts

SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 22, 2011 Researchers have demonstrated that the employees at the engineering firm, Woodard & Curran eat significantly more fruits and vegetables and get 50 percent more exercise every week than they did 12 months ago.

By participating in the
WellSteps Turnkey Wellness Solution they have experienced large improvements in nutrition, physical activity, and sleep quality. Employees also demonstrated fewer hospital and emergency room visits, and dramatically improved job satisfaction.  One year results of these wellness efforts will appear in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Woodard & Curran has demonstrated that by applying effective employee wellness solutions, companies can make a big change in a relatively short period of time.  Healthier employees have been shown to be more productive, have better morale and be less likely to require health care services.  As the cost of health care continues to rise, wellness programs are becoming a business necessity.

Dr. Ray Merrill, lead author of the study reports, "When employees participate in effective behavior change programs they can adopt and maintain healthy behaviors.  This is the first step to improving health and reducing health care costs."  Woodard & Curran made the decision to make employee wellness an important business strategy.  Plans are also in place to evaluate the impact of their wellness efforts on health care costs.

Once believed to be a business strategy exclusively for large companies, this research demonstrates that the benefits of an effective employee wellness program are available to businesses of any size.
